Washington county plans new tax break giveaway to Intel

The U.S. has a chronic shortage of jobs. Governments at all levels are using this as an excuse to give tax credits to big business. The result is a loss of tax revenue to support public services. We are throwing people out of the lifeboats. Another result is a shift in the tax burden from corporations to the rest of us. And from what I've read, the tax credits do NOT produce jobs. We need to demand that our elected officials stop playing this game.

Young anarchist wounded by the police in Colombia

As usual, this May Day there was a massive demonstration in Bogot?, Colombia. Hundreds of people from a diverse range of social movements took the streets to fight against capitalism. Walking along with the workers, there were a lot of young anarchists that agitated their black flags and shouted for freedom while hearing rock bands in a non-violent attitude. Suddenly, when the demonstration reached one of the main streets of downtown Bogot?, the police started to throw tear gas to the anarchists without any reason. Soon there was an explosion and the police initiated a violent repression, hitting people with wooden sticks and shooting rubber bullets in all directions. In this moment a 15 year old, who was walking inside the anarchist block, was badly beaten up by various policemen. read more >>

Well kids, this looks like it might be it... Car culture is on the skids. GM & Ford look like they might be going under and they'll probably drag much of the rest of the world economy down with them. The word "depression" has started to get some serious use in the mainstream media in the last few hours (a few hours too late) and it would probably happen even if they weren't allowed to use the word. So what's it, the depression, going to be like?

Their "action plan" refused to address any of the core issues of US Foreign and Defense policy, which are the root causes of a pervading culture of war and militarism that has taken over the nation in the years since WWII.

Ex-Haitian Prime Minister Yvon Neptune is Near Death

Political prisoner Yvon Neptune, Haiti's last constitutional Prime Minister, lies on the verge of death from a hunger strike, initiated because the de facto Haitian coup government has jailed him for 10 months without formal charges, in violation of Haiti's constitution. The National Coalition for Haitian Rights (NCHR), a widely discredited, USAID funded anti-Aristide group, has accused Neptune of participation in a massacre in the city of St. Marc in February 2004, but the illegal coup government has never offered any proof the massacre actually took place, and U.N. independent expert on human rights Louis Joinet recently dismissed accounts of the massacre.
Neptune has vowed to continue his hunger strike until he is either charged or released. The illegal "interim" regime of Gerard Latortue could easily meet this demand, but refuses. They should therefore concede they have no real case against Neptune and release him from prison. If Neptune is flown into exile, he wants the world to know, it was a kidnapping. The Insitute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti is asking that people pressure the Interim Government of Haiti to drop the charges against Neptune. May 5th Update

Code Pink in the Bay Area will hold a Mother's Day protest on Saturday, May 7th. They will gather at 1pm at CBS-5's offices on Battery Street at Broadway in San Francisco. The will march through "San Francisco's media block" and end at the U.S. Military Recruiting Office on 670 Davis Street. They seek to reclaim Mother's Day as the anti-war protest by people who had lost their sons to war. There will be events in other cities such as Menlo Park, where Raging Grannies and others will gather on Sunday, May 8th at 11am at the Menlo Park Farmer's Market to sing anti-war and counter military recruiting ditties, and watch a Julia Ward Howe re-enactor recite the original Mother's Day Proclamation. The downtown Urbana post office building is being transformed into a community media and arts center, with the post office services remaining at their current location. On Cinco de Mayo, the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (IMC) closed on the purchase of the post office building as its new home. The IMC will be holding a press conference on Monday, May 9th at high noon on the steps of post office building at 202 S. Broadway in Urbana. COME CELEBRATE WITH US!

Now, don't get me wrong, I've been heckled before. I've given speeches in most of the Red States across the country, and have gotten quite adept at the call-and-raise verbal jousting required when addressing an unfriendly crowd. I've been heckled by irate conservatives in Texas, in Montana, in North Carolina, in Colorado, in Arizona. I've been called a Socialist, a Communist, a Fascist, and a Communist Fascist, my own personal favorite. It's actually fun once you get used to it. Last week was a different thing, however. I got heckled by people on the Left.

This Wednesday, we got final language from the House and Senate negotiators working on the Iraqi War Funding bill regarding their decisions on REAL ID. By and large, they adopted REAL ID in its
entirety.
REAL ID now provides the Secretary of Homeland Security with the Authority to waive any legal regulation that would impede the construction of border barriers, fences, or roads. This construction would only be contestable in the courts on constitutional grounds.
With this bill, we are not only seeing the steamrolling over 30 years of environmental regulations, but also the assurance that more people will die crossing the border thanks to the US's failed trade policies.
Chicago activist arrested, released amid West Bank direct action

According to a newswire post, Chicago activist Nathan Stuckey was among 11 protesters arrested during a direct action in the farming village of Bil'in in the West Bank.
The direct action involved stopping the uprooting of olive trees by the Israeli military, which are being cleared to make way for the controversial Israeli separation wall.
A follow-up post, citing an email from Nathan himself, notes that the Bil'in Eleven have been freed "on the condition that [they] not enter closed military zones for the duration of [their] time in Israel".
Nathan is scheduled to return to Chicago in the coming couple of weeks and is scheduled to participate in a Walk for a Just Peace in Oak Park as well as in speaking engagements. PAFNY Denounces Linking of Consulate 'Grenade' Explosion, Protest Against Caterpillar

Speaking to reporters yesterday about the "grenade explosion" outside the British Consulate in Midtown, Ray Kelly and the NYPD mentioned to the press that left wing Jewish activists demonstrated last month against another tenant in the building -- a board member of Caterpillar Inc. -- over the bulldozing of Palestinian homes. The Palestine Activist Forum of New York (PAFNY) issued an angry denunciation of the NYPD statements. PAFNY "deplores in the strongest terms the efforts in the press to link our peaceful protest on April 13, 2005 -- opposing Caterpillar's sale of machinery used by the Israeli military to illegally demolish Palestinian civilian homes -- to the explosion in Manhattan today," the group said in a statement."There is no point in mentioning the Stop Caterpillar campaign or JATO in news accounts of this explosion, since there is no link, except to smear us."

Today, at 1:30, students for peace went over to Jefferson to take part in a walk out. It started off quite, and everyone was afraid that it would not work. There was a rumor flying that if you participated in the walk out that you would be suspended. Many of us had our doubts, but in the end it, all worked out.

The Minutemen are coming to San Diego

The felon Chris Simcox, leader of the riff-raff Minutemen border vigilantes, said last week that they are now coming to patrol the Mexico/California border in June. The Minutemen just completed a month long operation among the lizards and cacti in the Arizona desert but this time they will be operating in a region inhabited by millions of Mexicans on both sides of the border. Thanks to the deterrence provided by a number of human rights monitoring groups, there were no serious human rights violations in Arizona, but their operations in Alta California could have entirely different results.

Police Informant Billy Cottrell Gets 8 yrs Imprisonment

In April 2005, over a month later than expected, police informant William "Billy" Cottrell was sentenced for his role in a series of coordinated ELF arsons on four SUV dealerships, which saw the destruction of 125 vehicles. Much to everyone's surprise, Cottrell was not rewarded for his cooperation with the courts, but instead was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. This sentence sends out a strong message that informants will no longer find favours with the courts. I think actually it sends a message that the state didn't consider Cottrell an informant... He didn't tell them anything useful, because they already knew that if Cottrell was involved, so were Tyler and Oe... On the other hand, Cottrell's not viewed as having been cooperative with the courts or the FBI - he wouldn't play their game in the run-up to the trial, he refused to renounce his ecological views... The state don't like him, and neither do we.
Hikoi - one year on

One year ago, 30’000 people marched to parliament on the hikoi in opposition to the seabed and foreshore legislation. It’s been a year of protest that saw the formation of a new party (the Maori Party) and many extra-parliamentary protests. One day after the hikoi the confiscation legislation passed its first reading despite continuous protests and passed its final reading in November 2004. On 16th October 2004 2000 people were part of Hikoi Takutaimoana II in Tamaki Makaurau. In December a group called Te Mangoroa occupied the pier in Otautahi. In January 2005 Tuhoe people of the Uruwera region met representatives of the crown for a Waitangi Tribunal with anger. Cars were turned over and set alight. A Tino Rangatiratanga flag was fluttering in the wind as a symbol of resistance against colonisation and the Crown sponsored theft of indigenous lands. In March the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) released its decision on it. Since then plans for extensive sand mining and seabed exploration for mineral extraction have been made public. May 10, 2005 National Day of Action for GI Resisters

A new national coalition called Courage to Resist has called for a May 10th, 2005 National Day of Action to Support Military Resisters. (Flyer ) Navy Refuser Pablo Paredes and Army Objector Kevin Benderman will both appear before court martial tribunals (in San Diego and Fort Stewart, Georgia, respectively, and people are invited to attend to show their support for the two resisters). on May 11th for their refusal to participate in the Iraq war and occupation. Both men face military jail and forfeiture of pay and benefits if they are found guilty in the courts martial. Protesters plan to tell the U.S. military on May 10th that they believe that it is not a crime to resist a war and occupation that are illegal, and to respect conscientious objection.
The event in San Diego on May 10th kicks off a 4-day series of events in solidarity with Pablo Paredes in that city. "Voices of Resistance" will feature Pablo Paredes, Aidan Delgado, and Camilo Mejia, who will speak at the Bayview Baptist Church at 6134 Benson Ave (at 61st St, between Imperial Ave and Skyline Dr), at 7pm. Verdict in Anti-torture Protest Case Delayed

In February, three were charged for stepping onto the lower steps of the U.S. Supreme Court, during a protest against the US military's use of torture and the confirmation of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General. The judge has suspended a guilty verdict pending further written arguments.

Ex-Haitian PM Yvon Neptune Near Death

Political prisoner Yvon Neptune, Haiti's last constitutional Prime Minister, lies on the verge of death from a hunger strike, initiated because the de facto Haitian coup government has jailed him for 10 months without formal charges, in violation of Haiti's constitution. The National Coalition for Haitian Rights (NCHR), a widely discredited, USAID funded anti-Aristide group, has accused Neptune of participation in a massacre in the city of St. Marc in February 2004, but the illegal coup government has never offered any proof the massacre actually took place, and U.N. independent expert on human rights Louis Joinet recently dismissed accounts of the massacre.
Neptune has vowed to continue his hunger strike until he is either charged or released. The illegal "interim" regime of Gerard Latortue could easily meet this demand, but refuses. They should therefore concede they have no real case against Neptune and release him from prison. If Neptune is flown into exile, he wants the world to know, it was a kidnapping.

Oh for the Day When Journalists Were Journalists

I was doing a little research into the history of war reporting in preparation to lead a class on journalism in World War II at my son's elementary school, and found some old clips of the columns filed about that conflict by journalist Ernie Pyle.
They were eye-opening not just because of their sense of gritty veracity--he was right there taking the bullets with the grunts he was interviewing, one of which ultimately killed him in the Pacific--but because he never swallowed the jingoistic bilge that was ubiquitous during that conflict, as it is in every war.
