Activist DePaul Students Speak on Summer Delegations

While summer vacations are generally a time for students to escape their burdens, five DePaul activists decided instead to spend time in the countries of Colombia, Palestine and the Philippines.
This Thursday come listen to reportbacks by Matt Muchowski and Katie Williams who spent time in Colombia with the SINAL TRAINAL union which is attempting to organize Coca-Cola workers despite harassment and murder by Coca-Cola funded death squads. They also met with workers from the oil workers union, USO. The USO recently won a national strike. Matt and Katie were also able to meet with a variety of human rights and peasant organizations.
The following Wednesday Ben Meyer and Gihad of DePaul’s Students for Justice in Palestine will talk on their separate experiences. Both DePaulians went with a group that are working with youth who are affected by the Apartheid Wall. Gihad was also able to travel through several refugee camps, documenting the suffering of a people who’s home is occupied by an agressor army.
On Tuesday November 9, Jon ____ who is a member of DePaul’s Asian Cultural Exchange, spent two months travelling throughout the Philippines. Jon visited many rural villages, learning about the ongoing effects of the longtime U.S. military presence in this small island country.

Several protestors attempted to enter the building in order to disrupt the speech and give voice to local opposition to the Iraq war. The first attempt to get in the building was met with a line of hotel employees and police officers. The protesters where kept from entering the building and three people were arrested on charges of “trespassing”. The group loudly jeered the arresting officers and continued to occupy the sidewalk in front of the hotel. Two protesters were able to slip past and get into the lobby only to be told to leave by a GRPD officer. Despite their decision to comply with the officer’s command, one of the two was arrested for trespassing. While the protest continued in the front of the hotel, four determined individuals brandishing drums went around to the parking structure and attempted to enter the building from there. While going through the pedestrian bridge, the four drummers were tackled, arrested, and charged with “trespassing” and “failure to stop”. After they were forced to the ground and handcuffed, a security guard commented tothe police "Did you get all those rascals?"
On Monday evening a crowd of approximately fifty people marched to the Amway Grand Plaza to protest and disrupt a speech being given by the former “dictator” of Iraq, Paul Bremer. The event, a $150 a plate fundraiser, was sponsored by the World Affairs Council and was closed to both the general public and the press.

Last Sunday marked the first annual "De Valera Day" in Ennis Co. Clare the event was organised by Ógra Fianna Fáil in Clare after Bertie Ahern announced at the National youth Convention that there would be a De Valera day in Ennis every year. The celebrations culminated with a march of Local F.F. Cumainn from O Connel square to the Peoples Park where a Statue of Eamonn De Valera stands infront of the court house wall. As the ceremony was beginning two local anti war activists stood above the gathering on the court house wall and unveilled a large banner reading "U.S. MILITARY OUT OF SHANNON." and one of the activists began to heckle the speaker by shouting anti war slogans and jibes.A number of high profile Fianna Fáil members includeing the Defence Minister Willie O Dea, Minister O Cúiv, Junior Minister De Valera were standing directly below the protesters. "The Soldiers of Destiny" quickly dispatched four able bodied young men in Suits from Ógra Fianna Fáil who raced up to the courthouse in an effort to silence the two protesters. They came into the courthouse car park and dragged the two down from the low wall while trying to take their banner by physical force and push them out of the carpark. The protesters stood their ground while a photographer from the Clare Champion recorded the fracas. The members of Ógra Fianna Fáil threathened to call the Gardaí. At this point one of the activists informed them that that their actions in trying to prevent the protest by physically accosting the pair and attempting to steal the banner were the only possible criminal events that had taken place. The activists were subsequently left to continue the protest and the four party members quickly returned to the gathering below where they proceeded to call the Gardaí. A few minutes later two Gardaí arrived in a squad car but did not take an immediate interest in the anti-war demonstration. The Gardaí only spoke to the protesters at the very end of the event to tell them that they "didnt mind them being there but if you continue to shout I will arrest you for a breach of the peace". The heckeler in question asked the Garda if he would consider arresting the members of Fianna Fáil who were shouting back. The Garda did not respond. Britain continues to hold 14 foreign nationals who have never been charged with any offence. The supposed evidence against them remains secret. They were never questioned by the police. They have not been put on trial.
These men are detained under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001, which allows the Home Secretary to detain indefinitely any foreign nationals if he has 'reasonable suspicion' that they have links with 'international terrorism'. At hearings last year, the government acknowledged that some of the 'evidence' could have been obtained by torturing detainees elsewhere, e.g. Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib.
On Sunday 4 April over 200 people gathered outside Belmarsh Prison in south east London to protest against the indefinite internment of the 14 prisoners, and to demand the repeal of the UK's anti-terrorism laws. A wide range of people were present, from Muslim leaders to Sambatistas, from Green Party activists (including the deputy mayor of London and a London MEP) to Turkish communists, from Lawyers to anti-racism campaigners. On Tuesday, October 19, about 25 fellow workers who are members of the Workers’ Committee of Woodbridge, were arrested at the site where we gather peacefully each day to look for work. The site is located at the intersection of Route 1 and Longview Dr. in Woodbridge,VA. Some of the workers were detained on the adjacent grounds of Covenant Presbyterian Church (where we have been permitted to congregate), and moved to the 7 Eleven business site where they were arrested on charges of loitering. Some of them who produced identification were released with an court order to appear in court. Those with no ID were arrested. The latter were jailed in Manassas,VA and subsequently transferred to the custody or immigration officers, (ICE/INS).

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) attorneys filed a motion to unseal a secret US federal court order that led to the seizure of two servers hosting several websites and radio feeds belonging to Indymedia, a global collective of Independent Media Centers (IMCs) and thousands of journalists. The motion seeks to discover which agencies and governments are responsible for the seizure in order to hold them accountable. In their motion, EFF attorneys argue that "the public and the press have a clear and compelling interest in discovering under what authority the government was able unilaterally to prevent Internet publishers from exercising their First Amendment rights." They argue further that secret court orders circumvent due process, undermine confidence in the judicial system, and deny an avenue for redress. "When a secret order results in the unconstitutional silencing of media, the public has a right to know what happened," said Kurt Opsahl, EFF Staff Attorney. "Freedom of the press is an essential part of the First Amendment, and our government must show it had a compelling state interest to order such an extreme intrusion to the rights of the publisher and the public..."

In July 2002, President Bush ignored the recommendations of a blue-ribbon panel of population experts and rejected a bipartisan Congressional agreement that would have provided $34 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The Bush Administration withheld another $25 million in 2003 and $34 million more in 2004. The Bush administration's withdrawl of U.S. funding is estimated to have resulted in 2 million more unnecessary pregnancies each year in impoverished countries, 800,000 induced abortions, 4,700 maternal deaths and 77,000 infant and child deaths each year in these countries. In response to the Bush administration's reversal, two concerned U.S. women, Lois Abraham and Jane Roberts, began contacting friends and urging them to send $1 to support UNFPA programs. In the months that followed, they established a national grassroots campaign extending across the country, eventually calling it "34 Million Friends of UNFPA".

NYC Files Lawsuit to Stop Critical Mass

New York City filed a lawsuit today in an effort to stop the monthly critical mass ride. They are asking a judge to grant them an injunction enjoining "all other participants in Critical Mass bicycle rides form engaging in conduct that requires a permit without having first obtained such a permit." This of course begs the question: does riding a bike require a permit? Critical Mass has been a feature in New York City for nearly a decade, but over the last three months the city's commitment to stopping the ride has deepened since they set their sights on riders at the August Critical Mass which coincided with the start of the Republican National Convention.

A candlelight vigil to honor and protest the lost lives in Iraq will be held on Tuesday, October 26 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM in the Watsonville Main Plaza. The event will be attended by family members of Victor Gonzalez, a local Marine just killed in Iraq last week. Also present will be Fernando Suarez Del Solar, father of Jesus Suarez Del Solar, the first GI killed in Iraq. After the vigil, at 7:30 Mr. Suarez will be giving a talk about his experiences and the realities of the military enlistment and recruitment for Latino youth. The presentation will be in the Brown Beret Office located at 406 Main Street.
