Call to action from the CIW for International Indigenous Resistance Day

OCTOBER 12 DECLARATION AND CALL TO ACTION

We, the members of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), declare:

"No one discovered us, we were always here."
Over 500 years ago, on October 12, 1492 Columbus proclaimed our
discovery. After the invasion of the Americas, a large part of the
civilizations that had existed since the beginning of time were
destroyed. But many of us continue surviving and struggling.

"We are still here, and still resisting."
Half a millennium later, we, the indigenous people of the Americas; we
who speak Canjobal, Mam, Quiche, Mixteco, Zapoteco, and other
languages; we who have been displaced from our communities and forced
to emigrate to the United States by corporate greed and free trade
agreements (e.g. NAFTA) declare: time and time again powerful elites
have wanted to silence our voices, and for centuries we have resisted.

Today, those indigenous workers who have immigrated to Immokalee and
work in the tomato harvest earn wages of 40-45 cents per 32-pound
bucket, wages that have been stagnant for 20 years – all with no
benefits, no right to organize and, in the most extreme cases, facing
slavery in the fields of Florida while forced to work at gunpoint.
Every time that major buyers of the tomatoes we pick, such as Taco
Bell and YUM Brands (Taco Bell's parent company), demand cheap
tomatoes without thinking about the misery in which agricultural
workers live, they benefit from our exploitation.

It is for this reason that today the members of the CIW, men and women
of the corn, those of us who carry with us the indigenous spirit and
who have indigenous blood running through our veins, are calling on
everyone to struggle against corporate greed by boycotting Taco Bell.

Join our National Day of Action against Taco Bell to demand justice
for farmworkers; your community can protest in front of Taco Bell,
send postcards to YUM Brands, and unite this October 12th with
millions of people across the continent in the struggle for indigenous
rights by celebrating "International Indigenous Resistance Day."

Remember, as long as exploitation persists in the fields or in any
other part of the world, none of us can be considered free. TO
EXPLOIT ONE IS TO EXPLOIT ALL. Boycott Taco Bell!

12 OCTUBRE DECLARACION Y LLAMADA DE ACCION

Los miembros de la Coalicion de Trabajadores de Immokalee (CIW),
declaramos que:

"Nadie nos descubrio, siempre estuvimos aqui".
Hace mas de 500 años Colon proclamo nuestro descubrimiento en octubre
12 de 1492. Despues de la invasion de las americas gran parte de las
civilizaciones que exisitieron desde el principio de los tiempos
fueron destruidas. Pero muchos luchamos y sobrevivimos.

"Hemos permanecido y seguimos resistiendo"
Medio milenio mas tarde, nosotros, los indigenas de las americas; los
que hablamos Canjobal, Mam, Quiche, Mixteco, Zapoteco, y otros
idiomas; los que hemos sido desplazados de nuestras comunidades y
forzados a emigrar a los EUA por la ambicion corporativa y los
acuerdos de libre comerio (TLCAN) declaramos que: una y otra vez las
elites del poder han querido callar nuestras voces y por siglos, una y
otra vez hemos resistido.

Hoy en dia, los trabajadores indigenas que imigramos a Immokalee
recibimos sueldos estancados por mas de 20 años en la pisca de tomate
(40-45 centavos por cubeta de 32 libras), sin ninguna clase de
beneficios, sin el derecho a organizarnos, y en los casos mas
extremos, enfrentando esclavitud en los campos de la Florida forzados
a trabajar a punta de pistola. Cada vez que los grandes compradores
del tomate que piscamos como Taco Bell y Yum Brands (compañia madre de
Taco Bell) demandan tomate barato sin pensar en la miseria en que
viven los trabajadores agricolas, se estan benificiando de nuestra
explotacion.

Es por eso que hoy, los miembros de la CIW, los hombres y mujeres del
maiz, los que llevamos espiritu y sangre indigena en las venas,
hacemos un llamado a todos para luchar contra la avaricia corporativa
por medio del Boycott de Taco Bell.

Unete a nuestro dia nacional de accion contra Taco Bell en tu
comunidad para reclamar justicia para los trabajadores agricolas,
donde puedes hacer protestas frente a Taco Bell, mandar cartas a YUM
Brands, y donde puedes juntarte con millones de personas en el
continente, luchando por los derechos de los indigenas este 12 de
Octubre del 2004 para celebrar el "Dia Internacional de Resistencia
Indigena"

Recuerda que, mientras la esclavitud en los campos o en cualquier
lugar del mundo siga existiendo, ninguno de nosotros podemos
considerarnos libres. EXPLOTAR A UNO ES EXPLOTAR A TODOS. ¡Boycott
Taco Bell!
